What Is the Journey of Descent?
The journey is where you are inside your own experience — Discovery, Descent, Depth — independent of which phase the programme has reached. It is a separate axis from the phases: felt experience, not attendance record. A person can be in Discovery at any phase, or in Depth at their first event.
New here? Start with What Is the Descent? for the full picture. The word "journey" is not decoration — every person moves through Descent along their own arc, and this article is about that arc. Nothing is imposed. Everything that happens is something each person is actively choosing, before, during, and after.
Layer One — Discovery
The surface layer. Recognition, permission, first contact with what is possible. The point at which someone encounters Descent and sees, perhaps for the first time, that what they have kept private might have a place. It is not yet participation. It is the permission to consider.
What happens here
A person recognises desire. They see that there is a space where what they want can exist openly, without shame, without filtering. They understand what Descent is, and what it is not. They see that the framework is there, that the room is held, that the choice to go further is genuinely theirs to make. Discovery ends not with a decision to act, but with a decision to move closer.
The emotional texture
Curiosity. Cautious interest. The particular feeling of seeing something that speaks to you directly — something you didn't know had a name or a room. The relief of not being the only one. The slow realisation that what you want doesn't have to be a secret.
What it is not
A commitment. A threshold crossed. An obligation to go deeper. Discovery is the softest possible contact with the concept, and that softness is deliberate. The framework rewards curiosity without demanding anything. Nothing is assumed from arrival here.
The reframe
Discovery is where you find what you want on the surface. Not the surface of the event, but the surface of yourself. The thing that was already there, waiting to be seen.
Layer Two — Descent
The committed journey inward. The point at which curiosity becomes participation, and observation becomes being held. A person in the Descent layer has stepped inside the framework and is actively moving through the experience on their own terms, at their own depth. There is a felt sense of going somewhere, of choosing, rather than drifting.
What happens here
The person moves from encountering the concept to living inside it. The earlier, managed version of themselves — the filtered, performance-shaped version — begins to fall away. Not all at once, and not without the structure holding them. But the direction is inward. Trust is being built, in real time, through the experience of the framework actually working.
The emotional texture
Commitment. The particular focus of having chosen to go somewhere and feeling the ground under your feet as you go. The discovery that the structure holds: that the framework isn't just described but actually present. The moment when the room stops being a place you are visiting and becomes a place you are in.
What it is not
Observation. Performance for an audience. Passive experience. A person in the Descent layer is not watching; they are participating, at their own depth, on their own terms. The framework holds them. They are not performing for anyone.
The reframe
Descent is not falling. It is choosing to go deeper. There is a difference. One is something that happens to you. The other is something you do — with intention, with the framework around you, with the depth exactly as far as you want it to go.
Layer Three — Depth
The deepest layer. Arrival. The point at which participation becomes state: where the experience is no longer about the acts inside it, but about what is being shared, and who is being with whom. Depth is not something you do. It is somewhere you arrive.
What happens here
The person is no longer going anywhere. They are here. The experience has become less about individual moments and more about the quality of being present inside a shared thing. Performance has dropped. Distance has dropped. What remains is presence, connection, and a trust that can only be built by moving through the layers before it.
The emotional texture
Arrival. Presence without performance. The particular quality of being with other people inside something real — no posturing, no managing, no watching yourself from the outside. Shared vulnerability held with care. A connection that persists after the evening ends. The feeling, afterwards, of having been part of something rather than having attended something.
What it is not
An act. A peak moment. A performance of depth. Depth in the Descent sense is a state: something that settles over an experience rather than something that happens in a specific minute. It is also not reserved for the furthest or most intense point of any given evening. Depth is about the quality of presence, not the scale of what's happening.
The reframe
Beneath what looks like domination or submission, beneath the aesthetic of intensity, is trust, care, and connection. The deeper the experience goes, the less it is about acts and the more it becomes about state. This is what all of it was building toward: not a thing done, but a quality of being, together.
No fear. No insecurity. No performance. Just presence, trust, and being.
The Full Arc
Surface → honesty. Honesty → trust. Trust → shared immersion. The person does not complete Descent. They move through it. Discovery, Descent, Depth are not stages to tick off: they are qualities of experience that deepen with time, trust, and commitment. A person can return to Discovery. A person can find themselves suddenly in Depth. The layers are alive, not linear.
Where You Start
Most people arriving at Descent into Depravity 2 in Stockholm this August will be somewhere in Discovery — and that is exactly the right place to be. There is no expectation to be anywhere else. The framework rewards curiosity without demanding anything of it. See the Principles that hold the journey, or view upcoming events.
It's not about what you do. It's about what you become.
